The Groke Is Scary

By Tove Jansson

A book for small Grokes.

A new series about the eclectic characters of the Moomin Valley and about different emotions. Two- and three-year-olds will love the funny verse form and the surprising twist of the story!

The Groke is awfully scary. It doesn’t say a word, it merely stares at everyone. And it leaves a completely icy trail after itself as the Groke passes by! But what if Groke is just a misunderstood character? Could it be that Groke is just a lonely creature?

The Little Moomin series presents all the most beloved Moomin characters from Moomintroll to My, from Snorkmaiden to the Groke. At the same time children learn about different personality traits and all kinds of emotions. Even nice people can get angry and courageous ones can be scared!

The books are based on Tove Jansson’s charming original pictures and can be read to one-year-old children and toddlers. It feels safe to read together about different feelings and changing moods.

About the author

Tove Jansson (1914-2001), Finnish-Swedish writer and artist, achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Moomins, written and illustrated between 1945 and 1970. The books about the brave, adventurous, yet family-focused and home-loving Moomins have been translated into more than 50 languages and are still in print all over the world today. The Moomins were, of course, only a part of Jansson’s prodigious output. Already admired in Nordic art circles as a painter, cartoonist and illustrator, she would go on to write a series of classic novels and short stories. She remains Scandinavia’s best-loved author.Tove Jansson’s work reflected the tenets of her life: her love of family and nature, and her insistence on freedom to pursue her art. “Work and love” was the motto she chose for herself and her approach to both was joyful and uncompromising.
