The Hat
It appeared out of nowhere!
None of the little bugs knew what it was or where it came from. Some thought it was a nest. Another said it might have been something to eat! According to some, eternal night lived inside it. Every little bug and butterfly had an idea of what it could be, and everyone wanted it for themselves.
This book is an absurd story about a strange hat and its many twists and turns. Will the little bugs find a peaceful way to share the hat together?
The Hat by Anne Vasko is the last part of a trilogy, which deals with serious issues and big emotions with a humorous touch. The first part of the trilogy, A Kiss is a gender-neutral love story of an airplane and a library car, and the second part, Pony’s Tail is a crime story the size of a hobby horse.

“Anne Vasko’s picture book trilogy is playful, funny and multi-layered. At the same time, the works that combine fairy tale and surprise lead to the most important questions. Vasko’s illustrations, splashing in stunning colours, are skilful and beautiful.”
The White Ravens 2024 Jury
“The eponymous hat already looms large on the book cover: It is big and bright purple. It has eyes and – wait a minute – eight thin legs? Are the legs part of the hat? Or could other creatures be hiding under the brim? A few pages later, the hat is lifted and the secret revealed: Ants are scurrying around and underneath the purple object. However, they don’t realise it’s a hat, they think it might be a nest; or could it be something to eat? In addition to the ants, beetles come scurrying up, and then butterf lies start fluttering around, too. Suddenly everyone has an opinion about what’s up with the hat and, what’s more, everyone wants it for themselves. So, naturally, arguments are inevitable… Anne Vasko brings her dynamic story to life in expressive and colourful pictures – eyes are her speciality! Blink, blink, peek, peek!”
