Maija Hurme’s Picture Book Nominated for the 2025 Finlandia Prize in Children’s and Youth Literature
An exciting week continues as another author represented by Rights & Brands is nominated for the most prestigious literary prizes in Finland. Maija Hurme’s Where Do All the Days Come From? is one of the six titles shortlisted for this year’s Finlandia Prize in Children’s and Youth Literature.
Maija Hurme’s Where Do All the Days Come From? (Var kommer alla dagar ifrån/ Mistä kaikki päivät tulevat?) follows in the footsteps of her previous picture book, the multi-award-winning Last and Found. This philosophical and tender picture book for curious-minded children and adults alike, compiles children’s questions into an insightful and gently humorous work that shares their unique view of the world.
Maija Hurme is an illustrator, author and news graphic designer based in Helsinki. She’s a well-known name in the children’s book field and has illustrated children’s books, picture books, and poems. Several works have been published simultaneously in Finnish and Swedish.
The Finlandia jury’s motivation for Where Do All the Days Come From?:
“The book focuses on children’s reflections on their own experiences and the small and big questions of life, democratizing knowledge between children and adults. After all, not even grandma can answer why babies smell like popcorn. Beautiful illustrations and authentic text form a valuable dialogue where being present in the moment and encountering others invite us to pause and reflect together on the fundamental questions of life and existence”.
The Finlandia Prizes are Finland’s most prestigious literary awards, presented annually to outstanding Finnish books in three categories: fiction (novels), non-fiction, and children’s literature. Each prize is worth 30,000 euros. The winners will be announced on 27 November 2025.
