The Defenceless. Anna Fekete 2

A murder case tangled up with illegal immigration. Having the law on her side may not be enough for Anna.

When an old man is found dead on the road, detective Anna Fekete is certain that there is more to the incident than meets the eye. Anna is led on a deadly trail where illegal immigration, drugs and, ultimately, murder threaten not only her beliefs, but her life. Amid the increasingly dangerous police investigations Anna finds herself racked with homesickness.
Meanwhile, Anna’s partner Esko is investigating the activities of an immigrant gang. Deportation orders and raids result in desperate measures by gang members – and by the police themselves. Then a bloody knife is found in the snow and the two cases come together in ways that no one could have predicted.

A refugee who has gone underground to avoid deportation. A nameless senior citizen found dead in the middle of the road. Who exactly are defenceless, and in what ways?

“Intriguing... Repeated clashes between Anna’s Finnish upbringing and her Hungarian heritage add spice.”

“As a portrait of a (literally) cold new world, yet lightened by a degree of kindness and empathy, this would be hard to beat.”

“Kati Hiekkapelto has written a story so addictive, readers are left wanting more. Her books are a fine addition to the canon of crime fiction by Nordic women authors and stands up to international comparison.”
