Wild Thyme

In the summer of 1972, the news from Vietnam bring back Ida’s stifled memories from the war zone. Young Ida worked in a guesthouse during the war and became a victim of abuse. She gave birth to a son, who does not know about his father. They had to evacuate when their home town was invaded by the Soviets – and have never been able to return.

Anna has recently moved to a suburban apartment, just before her husband’s sudden death. Now she mourns the fact that they sacrificed their years together for their political cause.

Anna and Ida are grandmothers to little Hilla. Hilla is a lonely child whose parents are always on the go. Some desperately needed order is brought to her life in the form of a pioneer camp.

Kähkönen's narrative interweaves the dark tones and the bright hope naturally, just like life itself... The author manages to describe, without an accusatory tone, the worry, guilt and bravery passed on from one generation of women to the next.
