Otava partners up with Rights & Brands

Otava Publishing Company Ltd has become a minority shareholder in Rights & Brands, officially R&B Licensing AB.

Rights & Brands was founded in Spring 2016, working closely with its partners Moomin Characters and Bulls Licensing (Bulls Press AB), building on a long and successful collaborative licensing business, bringing Nordic rights to an international market. Rights & Brands is aiming to be one of the largest Nordic agencies, representing literary rights and brands like Moomin, Mamma Moo and Little Anna to a global network.

Otava is the largest book publisher in Finland with a publishing history spanning over 125 years. Otava Group Agency has successfully sold worldwide foreign rights of books by Finnish authors like Mauri Kunnas, Aino Havukainen, Sami Toivonen, Riikka Pulkkinen and Kati Hiekkapelto just to name a few. With the transaction, Otava Group Agency and its staff has been transferred to Rights & Brands.

Simultaneously with the transaction Mauri Kunnas, one of the internationally most well-known and widely published Finnish children’s book authors, has signed Rights & Brands as his agent for foreign rights and international licensing.

”The international appeal of Finnish literature has never been as strong as it is now, and at Otava we wish to do our utmost to take the books by our authors into the hands of readers all around the world. Together with Rights & Brands we aim to create a superb new era agency that represents the best of Nordic authors bringing all our international networks, sales skills and passion for literature into their service”, says Otava’s Publishing Director Minna Castrén.

”With its modern business perspective, complete chain of operations and as a true cultural carrier, Otava is the perfect partner for Rights & Brands”, says Margareta Steinsvik, Chairman of the Board, Rights & Brands.

”The Moomin brand has been sold globally for over 60 years. I’m excited that we can broaden the repertoire by also selling other Finnish character rights internationally”, says Sophia Jansson, Chairman of the Board at Moomin Characters, one of Rights & Brands’ partners.

“Today we are especially happy to welcome Mauri Kunnas to join the family of authors represented internationally by R&B”, says Jansson.

Rights & Brands appoints Bulls Licensing as sales partner

Rights & Brands has appointed Bulls Licensing as its merchandising rights sales partner.

Rights & Brands, founded in April 2016, brings Nordic rights to a global arena. The literary and design focused agency has already gathered an impressive line-up of Nordic brands and authors; from the literary rights for the Moomins and the merchandising rights for the Tove Jansson Estate, to the prize-winning authors Pernilla Stalfelt, Jon Ewo and Ragnar Aalbu.

Recently appointed merchandising rights are the internationally successful Mamma Moo and Crow as well as the classic properties Little Anna and Little Ghost Godfrey.

-   We have had nothing less than a dream start, says Anna Lawrence, Foreign Rights Director at Rights & Brands. The interest for the agency has been enormous and we are now working with a fantastic set-up of Licensors. To handle the interest and to further business, we are working with Bulls Licensing as our merchandising sales partner. We share the same client base and international knowledge, so it’s a perfect fit.
-   Adding Bulls Licensing’s merchandising expertise to Rights & Brands’ publishing network is a fantastic business opportunity, says Kristin Tjulander, Marketing and Sales Director at Bulls Licensing.  This will really put the Nordics on the global brand map.

New licensing agency brings Nordic rights to a global arena

A new Nordic agency for literary rights and brand licensing, Rights & Brands, has been founded by Moomin Characters Oy and Bulls Press AB together with Roleff Kråkström and Gustav Melin.

With a literary base, a clear design and illustration orientation and a business model based on a global network with Nordic roots, Rights & Brands will be the first choice for clients reaching for a worldwide audience.

”We have a joint network of over 600 clients worldwide and an established working relationship with a dozen agents in key markets; Japan, Korea and China, to mention but a few”, says Anna Lawrence, Foreign Rights Director at Rights & Brands. ”The constellation of people and the competence within and around Rights & Brands is unique. It feels fantastic to be part of this project from the start.”

It all comes down to the respect for the artist and the author

”Rights & Brands will be the first 360 agency for literary based Nordic rights. We will bring publishing rights to an international arena while building the potential for licensing, merchandising and full-scale digital presence worldwide” says Roleff Kråkström, CEO of Moomin Characters. ”Based on our experiences and successes with Moomin, which today reaches a retail value of 6 million euros, we know that our formula is scalable and applicable to other brands.”

Sophia Jansson, Creative Director at Moomin Characters, says; ”It all comes down to the respect for the artist and the author. Every country approaches a story in a different way. We don’t need to change anything, just give the works the right opportunity.”

We will bring Nordic rights to a global arena

”Readiness, flexibility and the ability to think outside the box has always been our strengths. In this joint venture, we will be even more powerful. We will assist in every step, from legal procedures to brand building.

The fact that several Nordic creators have already been in touch, tells us that Rights & Brands have a much-needed function to fill”, says Gustav Melin, Licensing Director at Bulls Press/Bulls Licensing. ”The trend has been to bring Anglo-Saxon rights  to the Nordics, now we will bring Nordic rights to a global arena. Bologna Children’s Book Fair is the first step on the way”.

From the outset, Rights & Brands will work with a selection of clients, among others the worldwide publishing rights for Tove Jansson and Moomin.

”We have founded Rights & Brands because Nordic creators deserve international exposure. There is a large audience, both in traditional and digital channels, looking for Nordic design and values”, tells Margareta Steinsvik, VP, Bulls Press. ”We want to give more people the chance to get to know the fantastic stories and brands that we have in the Nordics. Our established platform makes this possible.”
