Nordicbuddies’ new collection honors the Moomin novel Comet in Moominland

Nordicbuddies’ latest apparel collection honors Tove Jansson’s first Moomin novel, Comet in Moominland. The designs intricately blend original illustrations with text passages from the book, highlighting Jansson’s artistry as both a writer and an illustrator.

Comet in Moominland, published in 1946, centres around a comet approaching Moominvalley. As it’s the first Moomin novel, it introduces many of the residents of Moominvalley and provides some essential learnings about the Moomins.

Nordicbuddies’ new collection, inspired by the story, features shirts, socks, caps, posters, and tote bags, all adorned with original black-and-white illustrations from the book.

Tommy Tarvonen, Lead Designer at Nordicbuddies, tells moomin.com that the illustrations for the collection were selected to reflect the tension and emotional depth of the story.

“The approaching comet symbolizes a looming threat — something that feels deeply relevant in today’s unstable world. But as the danger draws near, the visuals also highlight what carries us through tough times: friendship, joy, and teamwork. We wanted to show that, even when uncertainty looms, it’s those small, meaningful connections that keep us grounded.”

The inhabitants of Moominvalley all respond to the looming catastrophe in their own ways. While some gloom as a comet is approaching Moominvalley, others want to enjoy life while they still can, and for example, throw a party.

The long-sleeved shirt pictured above is the Nordicbuddies’ team’s favourite. “It features a brand-new, beautiful unisex fit, and we love how the back print and sleeve illustrations work together — it’s cool, it’s current, and it showcases some of the strongest artwork in the collection,” Head of Marketing & Design Sarianna Virtanen tells.

Like the long-sleeve, many of the products in the collection feature either text excerpts from the book or short texts related to the story. The Japanese text translates to “Comet in Moominland”, and “pyrstötähti” is Finnish for comet.
