Blue and small, and standing only three apples tall, The Smurfs have now premiered on Nickelodeon in an all-new series and will start production on several new films.
The new animated TV series The Smurfs was launched in the U.S. in September and premiered on Nickelodeon in the Nordic countries during January. The first season has been very successful, and the series has already been renewed for a second season. The news was announced by Nickelodeon, LAFIG Belgium and IMPS, the worldwide licensors for The Smurfs.

The new TV show features classical characters such as Smurfette, Gargamel and Papa Smurf, but also introduces a new tribe of girl Smurfs, led by the brave and wise matriarch Willow.
The original series marks the return of the globally renowned characters to television for the first time in nearly 40 years and follows Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, Hefty, Clumsy and the other inhabitants of Smurf Village on all-new adventures, packed with humor, heart and high-stakes action. In the premiere episode, “Smurf-Fu,” when Smurfette rescues Brainy from a giant snake, the other Smurfs ask her to teach them “Smurf-Fu.” Next in, “Diaper Daddy,” when everyone is tired of changing Baby’s diapers, Handy decides to invent a robot that will do the job.
New films in production
Last week, Paramount Animation, Nickelodeon Animation, LAFIG Belgium and IMPS also announced that they will start to produce multiple movies based on the Smurfs. The first movie will be an animated musical film that is planned to premiere in December, 2024.
Sony previously had the iconic characters brand, which was created by Belgian artist Pierre Culliford aka Peyo. Through three theatrical releases, the Smurfs movies racked up more than $1.1 billion worldwide.
